Our Story

Built by a
community

Masjid Bilal Islamic Center grew out of the Somali community of Louisville and its search for a permanent home for worship, education, and one another.

[Such niches are] in mosques which Allah has ordered to be raised and that His name be mentioned therein; exalting Him within them in the morning and the evenings
Surah An-Nur, 24:36
History

How we
got here

  1. Early Years

    A Community's Vision

The Somali community in Louisville sets out to find religious and social centers that can meet its growing needs — worship, raising children, Qur'anic education, and the everyday networks that hold a community together.

  2. 2013

    Masjid Bilal West

The community purchases its first facility — an important step, and a permanent place to pray, to study the Qur'an and Islam, and to strengthen the ties and unity of the community.

  3. 2021

    Masjid Bilal South Side

As the community grows and many families move to the south side of Louisville, a larger facility is purchased closer to where those families live — with room for prayers, classes, youth programs, and family gatherings.

  4. Today

    Two Centers, One Mission

Both masjids reflect the dedication and vision of Louisville's Somali community. The goal was never only a place to worship, but centers that nurture generations, teach the religion, support families, guide youth, and strengthen brotherhood and service across the city.

Our Mission

Worship, learning,
and care

We exist to keep the doors open — for the five daily prayers, for Jumu’ah, for the child learning their first surah, and for the neighbour who walks in needing help.

The masjid is open twenty-four hours a day. There is no hour at which a Muslim in Louisville has nowhere to pray.

Open around the clock for the five daily prayers, Jumu'ah, Qur'anic education, and anyone who needs a place to go.

Do not stand [for prayer] within it - ever. A mosque founded on righteousness from the first day is more worthy for you to stand in. Within it are men who love to purify themselves; and Allah loves those who purify themselves
Surah At-Tawbah, 9:108
